Elon Casino Blackjack: totals, decisions and table variants

Blackjack asks whether a hand can finish closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding 21. Evolution describes classic live Blackjack and several variants, while Pragmatic Play's Free Bet Blackjack shows why a familiar action can settle differently at another table. The game name alone is not a complete rulebook.
First calculate the hand, including any ace
Number cards count by their number and picture cards by ten; an ace can count as eleven while that keeps the hand at 21 or less, otherwise as one. A hand with an ace currently counted as eleven is soft. A hand whose aces must count as one is hard. This distinction matters before interpreting a drawn card. The dealer's visible card gives context, but the dealer's subsequent actions follow that table's printed rules.
For example, ace plus six is soft 17. Drawing a five does not bust it: count the ace as one and the new total is 1+6+5=12. By contrast, ten plus seven is hard 17; drawing a five makes 22, which exceeds 21. Calling both starting hands '17' without naming soft or hard hides this difference.
Hit, stand, double and split change the hand differently
Hit takes another card; stand ends your draw. Double Down increases the stake under the table's rules and changes how many cards may be taken. Split applies to an eligible starting pair, creating separate hands and separate stake exposure. Evolution lists these as classic live-table decisions and identifies insurance as an optional additional bet.
Consider a hard 11 made from nine plus two. A double decision is not the same as an ordinary hit: it changes the stake as well as the card sequence. If the initial stake is four units, a standard paid double would commit another four, for eight total; an ordinary hit leaves the initial four unchanged. This is a commitment example, not a recommendation, and variant rules may define a special free double.
Compare the final hand, not just its own total
A player total of 20 is not automatically a win; if the dealer also finishes on 20, the main hand ordinarily pushes under the usual comparison, while a dealer 21 beats a non-blackjack 20. A player who exceeds 21 has already busted, regardless of a later dealer result. Read the table's exact treatment of naturals and ties rather than assuming a universal payout.
Suppose a hard hand ends at 19 and the dealer ends at 18: the hand is closer to 21 and qualifies under the ordinary comparison. If the dealer instead ends at 20, that same 19 loses. The player made no new decision between those examples; the dealer's final total changed the settlement. This is why a snapshot of the player's cards alone is incomplete.
Variant exceptions belong to their named table
Evolution distinguishes regular live Blackjack from Infinite, Free Bet and Power versions. Seat count, side bets and special actions vary. Pragmatic Play's Free Bet Blackjack allows specified doubles or splits without increasing the original stake, but also has a Push on 22 exception: when the dealer busts on 22, active player bets push except winning blackjack hands. That exception is not a rule of every blackjack table.
Before a decision, read whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, the natural-blackjack payout, doubling or splitting restrictions and any side-bet rules at that table. Insurance is separate from the main hand. A side bet can lose while the main hand wins, or vice versa, so record each stake and return separately.
